Monetizing a Flash game with self serve ads. A success?

Knight of the Dead has been ‘in the wild’ for 5 days now and has received a wide range of exposure. Most interestingly the game was only submitted to newgrounds.com and, at the time of writing, has spread virally to 92 unique domains with 153629 global plays. The fact the game has spread this much is pretty exciting since I hadn’t done any work submitting the game to other sites.

I have also acquired my first advertiser, stoneagegames.com, who have been brave enough to take a gamble advertising in my game’s custom ad space!

For those unaware, I built my own custom ad system to remotely load an ad into the game’s preloader. This works pretty much identically to Mochiads with the benefit of being able to sell and host the ads myself, getting 100% of the revenue. The fact that stoneagegames.com has decided to try out this space has proven to me that a custom ’self-serve’ ad system can be a viable option to monetize a Flash game and can definitely be a more profitable option for developers over the larger revenue share pay-per-click ad services.

Moving forward I hope to release more quality games that carry this ad system and to build and grow my own private ad network through these games.

Zombie Game, Knight of the Dead out now!

After about 5 weeks of development I’m please to announce the release of my first public Flash game Knight of the Dead.

Knight of the Dead is a side-scrolling hack and slash fest where the player takes the role of of a Knight who must defend himself against a horde of attacking zombies. Enemies drop money which can be used between levels to purchase weapon upgrades, health, amulets or to repair their shield.

At this stage I plan to keep Knight of the Dead hosted exclusively here on ahrooga.com but hope to release the game publicly at a later stage. I have been having issues acquiring sponsorship on flashgamelicense.com due to bidding sponsors not replying to PM’s.

I’m also happy to announce that I have successfully produced my own custom in-game ad service as mentioned in a previous post. My system works similarly to MochiAds in that I can swap out the ads remotely and configure ad-disabled-domains. I also have my own tracking system in place. The benefit of this is I am able to rent the ad space privately, cutting out the middle man.

Game update. Now with self serve ads.

I mentioned a while ago that I was working on a Flash game and I think it’s time I showed an update. As you can see from the screen shot it’s had some substantial progress since my first posting.

Monetizing your Flash game. Serving your own ads?

Lately I’ve been thinking about ways to go about monetizing my latest flash game to maximize the amount of income possible. As it currently stands in the Flash game community there are 3 ways developers are currently monetizing their work. Id like to briefly cover them and go over each of their pros and cons and then explain an idea I have. (more…)
