CellPaint.com - Open to everyone, again.

www.cellpaint.com

While it’s been a case of “in again, out again”, I have again removed the registration system from my flash based painting site cellpaint.com.

I’ve decided that I will get more contributors without forcing people to register. The downside of this is it makes moderating users near to impossible and this is something I have accepted. Looking at the types of things users have been submitting it’s obvious people prefer to submit “quick scribbles” rather than full blown illustrations as I had envisioned while developing CellPaint.

To help stop the site from filling up, cells now have a lifespan of 7 days from the time they are submitted. I am hoping this will help keep the site fresh and constantly changing.

Cellpaint.com - Updated

www.cellpaint.com

I have just rolled out the latest incarnation of my AS3 based flash site, cellpaint.com. This latest version includes several new features including:

Faster rendering
Cells are drawn to one of 9 large bitmaps rather than kept as individual instances. This has increased performance ten-fold especially when navigating the cells.

Editable cells
One of the most requested features. A user can now submit a cell and then edit it at a later stage. This will hopefully encourage users to take more pride in their work and keep them coming back to work on their masterpiece. The downside to this is layers are lost and the image is flattened between saves.

Login now required
Users wanting to paint a cell must be registered and logged in. Anyone not logged in can navigate/view/expand cells freely.

Menu items
New since the previous version is menu buttons across the top of the screen. These currently don’t do anything so don’t panic if nothing happens when you click on them.

Back end updates
The back end has had various changes to make things more secure.

I still consider cellpaint.com to be work-in-progress and there are a few outstanding issues to be wary of. These include:

Menu buttons don’t work.
Cell submit button briefly locks up the player. This confuses people into thinking the button isn’t working.
Currently no password reset in place.
No ‘undo’ in the paint application. This is something that may not be included for a while. Users are encouraged to work with layers in the meantime.

Introducing CellPaint.com

While it is far from finished and not without it’s bugs but I figured now is as good a time as any to introduce the project my Actionscript 3.0 based painting application is to be used for, cellpaint.com. This is a personal project of mine which allows users to come and… well… paint a cell.

The idea is people will come and create an artwork right there within flash using the painting tools and submit it. No need to know photoshop or stuff around with uploads. The idea is influenced slightly by the million dollar homepage but being free to users.

At the moment anyone can come and paint a cell without being logged in as this feature is yet to be fully implemented.

Please note that the server I am currently running this on is pretty average and am about to move it to a new one. Having said that please come and check it out and draw something. I would love to hear your feedback.
